If you lived in Red Oak in the 1800s, you’d have told folks you lived in Possum Trot. While it’s not the best of names, true to its roots, it’s named for the many opossums scuttling around. 

When Ellis County was formed in 1849, the name was changed to Red Oak, after the area’s nearby creek and towering oak trees. And yes, you can still spot some opposums at night, which are this place’s original residents. 

Bonus fact: In North America, we shorten ‘oppossum’ to ‘possum’, but the real ‘possums’ are native to Australasia! 

2. The Patton Family Was One Of The Earliest Settlers 

Colonel James E. Patton and his family are recognized as some of the earliest settlers in the Red Oak area. They initially made their home along Red Oak Creek, near Ovilla. Over time, the Patton family relocated closer to the center of present-day Red Oak, helping lay the foundation for the community’s early roots and lasting legacy. Their presence played a key role in the area’s rich growth during the mid-1800s, and their legacy remains a proud part of Red Oak’s pioneer history. 

3. Red Oak Has The First Church In Ellis County 

The Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized and chartered in 1847, making it the first officially organized church in Ellis County. In fact, it was established two years before Ellis County was even formally formed in 1849!

So, not only is it the oldest congregation in the area, but it technically existed before the county itself did. The church building you see today was completed in 1872, but you can still see the plaque commemorating the first original church, making it a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. 4. The Town Physically moved in the 1800s 

Yes, you read that right! Red Oak relocated in the 1890s after the railroad arrived. 

In 1884, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad extended its line to Red Oak. However, the townsfolk thought the rumbling trains would wreck their peace, so they laid the tracks about a mile outside town to preserve the calm and tranquility of daily life. 

This sounded good on paper, but suddenly, all that “convenient peace” was inconvenient. It was a hassle, so 1893 residents packed up and moved the town center alongside the tracks, giving Red Oak a rail line for better access and new growth opportunities. 

5. It Was A Film Set For Bonnie And Clyde 

Red Oak may have a small-town vibe, but it once hit the big screen. With its scenic backroads and vintage charm, it was picked as one of the filming locations for the 1967 classic Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. 

Filmmakers loved Red Oak’s authentic look. There was no need to fake the small-town Texas vibe, as Red Oak already had it. Local buildings and streets were featured in several scenes, giving the movie that gritty, old-timey feel.

Believe it or not, the first school of Red Oak burned down twice at the exact location: the corner of Red Oak Road and Methodist Street. The simple white-framed building caught on fire after being struck by lightning during a heavy storm. 

Later that same year, they rebuilt it bigger and better, making it a two-and-a-half-story building and eventually adding a gymnasium in 1937. However, tragically, in 1963, the building burned down again. There was no lightning this time, but sadly, the school and the gym were lost. 

But like the strong oak tree, Red Oak is resilient. That site became home to Red Oak Elementary, the district’s first elementary school. 

9.  It’s Home to a 100-Year-Old Fire Truck
